Answer by GeoffG
“Sputnik 1 burned up on 4 January 1958, as it fell from orbit upon reentering Earth’s atmosphere, after travelling about 60 million km (37 million miles) and spending 3 months in orbit.”
It was not “brought back down,” but burned up on reentry.

There were two Sputniks. Sputnik 2 was launched on November 3, 1957. This mission ended on November 8, 1957.

It wasn't: it came down of its own accord on January 4, 1958 after spending three months in orbit.
