The play begins just after the turn of the 20th Century. The play as a whole spans quite a lot of time (as do other Chekhov plays – Uncle Vanya for instance) and ends sometime in september. ACT 2 takes place mid-summer, ACT 3 begins in August, ACT 4 is “Several weeks later.”
