I’m no expert on his quartets, but his “Festive Overture” (1954) was awesome. It was one of the most challenging pieces I’ve ever played as part of an orchestra. It’s a very moving piece of music, and I still get goosebumps when I hear it on NPR (of course, the Moscow Symphony plays it a lot better than my little college ensemble did).

I'm not sure if any are considered his masterpieces, but of the quartets that i've heard, I think No. 8 in c minor is my favorite. His Symphony no. 9 is pretty amazing as well.
