Hi. He launched towards the east to take advantage of the Earth’s rotation. We still do.

If you were up in space looking down on the north pole, he moved counterclockwise, as do almost all artificial satellites, and as does the Moon.
That is the direction the Earth rotates, so a rocket being llaunched already has that motion–worth about 1000 km/h from where Gagarin was launched.

    Spinning Wheel
    Blood, Sweat and Tears

What goes up must come down
Spinnin' wheel got to go 'round
Talkin' 'bout your troubles it's a cryin' sin
Ride a painted pony let the spinnin' wheel spin

You got no money and you got no home
    Spinnin' wheel all alone
Talkin' 'bout your troubles and you never learn
Ride a painted pony let the spinnin' wheel turn

Did you find the directing sign on the
    Straight and narrow highway
Would you mind a reflecting sign
Just let it shine within your mind
And show you the colors that are real

Someone is waiting just for you
    Spinnin' wheel, spinnin' true
Drop all your troubles by the riverside
Catch a painted pony on the spinning wheel ride]

Most spacecraft travel from left to right and up and down in a trajectory, that the earth is rotating on it's axis. That would also mean is was going counterclockwise if you were looking at the earth, especially from the Northern Hemisphere where Russia is located.
