Question by rani: The soviets launched sputnik 1 on October 4, 1957. Who were the key people and nations involved in this event?

Yup, that sounds right.
Key people:
–Sergei Korolev: he was the first to propose the development/launching of an artificial satellite (in 1954, to Dmitry Ustinov, then Minister of Defense Industries)
–Vasily Ryabikov: the head of the State Commission on R-7 rocket test launches
–Georgi Grechko: calculated a rocket trajectory
–U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower
