He cited "advancing age and deterioration of his health" as his reasons for leaving. Some people think a conspiracy forced him to step down, but I dont believe that one. Hope that helps you.

Certain conservative, political factions of the Communist party didn't like his style of leadership, and they worked to bring him down. His biggest mistake was underestimating the will of US to stand firm against the USSR during the Cuban Missile crisis. The fact that JFK forced Krushchev to remove his nuclear missles from Cuba, is thought to be the the major political embarassment that signalled the end of his career.

his enthusiastic belief that Communism would triumph over capitalism, and the fact that he was the only Soviet leader ever to be removed peacefully from office–a direct result of the post-Stalin thaw he had instigated in 1956.

He was forced to by a group of conspirators.
In constrast to Joseph Stalin, Khrushev relaxed the government's grip on the life of the country, and suffered for that. Reasons for conspiracy – guess they were unhappy about his style (shoe banging in UN, Carribean crisis, etc.)

Kinda like what happened to Mikhail Gorbachev.
