Why did Stalin decide to go against the teachings of Lenin?

Question by PROPANE: Why did “Iron Joe” Stalin decide to go against the teachings of Lenin and instead become a dictator?
In other words, why did he become a power-hungry maniac instead of going by the original guidelines of the Soviet Union, and why did the Communist Party of the Soviet Union make him their leader? Also, why wasn’t Stalin tried for the brutality of the Great Purge, which happened even before and during WWII?
Nearly forgot about that, thanks for the info Judicator! Still, it seems like he got far too obsessed with his power and forgot the whole point of the Communist manifesto.

Actually, the communist manifesto gives credence to using state power to reach the final stage. Stalin would be between the dictatorship of the bourgeois and the dictatorship of the proletariat accordingly.

Since then, non authoritative methods have been developed, what the Europeans call libertarian socialists.

Because he croaked while the communists were still in power. But then again, I don't recall a single one of his helpers being put on trial after communism finally ended, even though compared to that murderous crew Hitler and the nazis were rank amateurs.
