Why do people say Russian Princess Anastasia Romanov escaped?

Question by Mary: Why do people say Russian Princess Anastasia Romanov escaped when the rest of her family were executed?
Where did this theory come from? Is there any evidence to support it? If not, why is it rumored?

It arose because a woman, Anna Anderson, appeared in the 1920s claiming to be the Grand Duchess Anastasia. It continued to spread because so many people love conspiracy theories and, at the time, there was no way of conclusively disproving what Anna Anderson said – it is notoriously difficult to prove a negative. Other women made similar claims – for a full discussion see:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Duchess_Anastasia_Nikolaevna_of_Russia#False_reports_of_survival_and_identification_of_Romanov_remains. As that article tells you, after intensive DNA testing on the remains found in and near Ekaterinburg, all members of the Romanov family have been accounted for.

I advise you to click on my website. Listed, I have been told growing up she was my great grandmother, and believe I have a reason to find out, if those stories were told are true. I would be her eldest great grand daughter, and her spitting image! Trying to solve the mystery by DNA testing. Anyone with any information to help me would be appreciated. I will provide the immigration information into Canada of Anastasia to the researcher who will help me by doing mitochondrial DNA testing. Please feel free to send me an email. You can only solve the mystery if your part of the family (DNA) & secrets are always kept.

Because at first, they couldn't find her body. Not sure if they did now or not.

When the White Russian troops (opponents of the Bolsheviks in the Russian civil war) captured Yekaterinburg where the family was executed in 1918 they started the investigation straight away. Investigator Sokolov managed to find maimed by sulfuric acid and mutilated bodies of all royal family members except for remains of prince Alexei and one of his sisters in summer of 1919. (We now know that Alexei and his sister Maria were buried by their executors separately from other members of the family and their servants.) At that time (in 1919) Anastasia (whose remains were found with other family members) was by mistake identified as princess Maria what gave a rise to speculations that both Alexei and Anastasia managed to somehow escape the execution.
