Why do Russian people consider Georgian Stalin a great Russian?

Question by Richard J: How is it that the Russian people consider Georgian Stalin a (great) Russian?
Apparently many Russians consider Stalin the greatest Russian. But Stalin was not a Russian, but a Georgian. What’s going on?

There are certain things the Russian people respect Joseph Stalin for: due to him the USSR became a world power and was able to withstand the II Patriotic War (and to free Europe from fascism as well). You might say, the whole power and strength of the USSR are embodied in Stalin's personality. Isn't that enough to consider him one of the greatest Russians (better to say – Soviets)?

Are you kidding????? Russian government did all it could to publicly show Stalin as "good", but he was horrible!!!! Russians hated him, and we still do! We just couldn't say anything bad about him, or any other government official during the Soviet times. If anyone would have said anything bad about him, would have been killed immediately, he was a very mean dictator.

Yeah, when you hear of polls like that coming out of Russia it really makes you wonder about their current state of education and how effective their political manipulation of blind nationalism is. How we react to this poll kind of reminds us of how the rest of world viewed the USA the last time Bush got voted in, really.

It is the same as George Washington, a Virginian, being elected as the first U.S, President. Georgia was at the time, a state of the USSR

"Home town (neighborhood/country) Boy", good or bad is irrelevant, powerful and famous is. Close is good enough, Hitler was Austrian.

He was also a mildly genocidal murderer (Ukraine), but Russia needs to distract people from its government corruption.

Well he did lead the USSR, much of which is Russia. And apparently they have extremely short memories.
