Some people, to this day, think Lenin was a great person and a hero – How can they hold this belief?

I believe you are confusing Lenin and Stalin, perhaps?

Lenin was a great man, and heroic leader who unified Russia, ended their involvement in WWI, overthrew the murderous and inbred monarchy, improved living conditions, and introduced modernization to Russia. He was brilliant and admitted when he was wrong, instituting capitalist policies after the revolution. He was open and fair, and certainly not a mass-murderer. Perhaps you (and another person here) are confusing him with his successor, Stalin, the mass-murdering madman and tyrant who exalted himself to the level of a deity.
