Why is Dostoevsky considered one of the greatest writers?

Question by marc: Why is Dostoevsky considered one of the world’s greatest writers?
I am currently reading The Brothers Karamozov and I admit that I am enjoying it. Was he really able to penetrate the minds of his characters to the extent that critics often give him credit? The more technical aspects of his writing also seemed flawed. Is he overrated?
