Why was Mikhail Gorbachev named Person of the Decade?

Question by Stumpy: Why was Mikhail Gorbachev Person of the Decade?
Can someone explain to me the reasons as to why Mikhail Gorbachev was Person of the Decade? I’m writing a paper on it. What kind of work did he do to earn this acheivment? And what was his impact on culture/politics? Thanks.

The fall of the Soviet Union and the Berlin Wall and what not was certainly the most important event of the 1980s (yes I know the Soviet Union didn't fall until 1991, but the events of the 80s were the key) and Gorbachev had more to do with it than any other person, by implementing political and economic reforms that set the process in motion.

Mikhail Gorbachev was credited by the magazine for ending the Cold War, ending the Soviet Union's occupation of Eastern Europe and orderly dissolving the Soviet Union.
