Andrei Rublev easily. Greatest of all time, though? lol Maybe top 5 from Russia. Just because Ingmar Turdman thought he was "the greatest" director doesn't mean he actually was. Bergman was just as much up his own ass as the next run of the mill art house director. Tarkovsky, all in all, might be in the list of greatest directors of all time, but it would have to be a pretty long list and it would be almost at the end. he is probably one of the greatest Russian directors of all time, but thats not saying much. but I would probably put him (*makes sarcastic masturbation motion) after Sergei M. Eisenstein.

Why Stalker? Well, maybe because I like the sheer originality of plot/concept.

Too many reviewers and film experts have already put Tarkovsky on various list. So, if you don't mind, I'd rather not add to the clutter out there :-).

Let's just say he was a visionary director (and a fantastic technician too) who also happened to handle science fiction like no one else.
